On Friday the 8th of March. The Orpheus was very honoured to have a voice coaching session with one of this country’s finest Operatic Mezzo Soprano's, Yvonne Howard.
Yvonne, who was originally from Stafford, studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and made her Operatic debut with the Royal Opera House as Mercedes in "Carmen". For Opera North she performed the role of Frika in "Das Rheingold", and Mrs Grose in "The Turn of the Screw".
Yvonne performs regularly with all of the major UK Opera Companies. Her critically acclaimed performances include: Siglinde in "Die Walkure" with Sir Mark Elder and the Halle. Leonore in "Fidelio" and Mother in "Hansel und Gretel" for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. She recently performed the role of Nettie Fowler in "Carousel" at the Barbican.
Yvonne was nominated for "Best Actress" award for her role as Marilyn Klinghoffer in Penny Woolcock's film "The Death of Klinghoffer"
Yvonne doing a great job of improving our diction... (No small challenge if you're from the Cannock area) After all, there's no point singing if the audience can't understand a word we sing...
We were given tips on improving our Vowel sounds and Consonants...All with the aid of Peppermint tea. We worked on correctly pronouncing the two separate "T's". Everyone could hear the difference this made when we transferred the exercise to actual singing.
Here we are doing breathing exercises. Getting rid of the "nasty air" before filling our "Pie Spaces" with good air before we start to sing.
This was great fun, and together with the loosening up exercises made a great difference to the way we sang and there was a noticeable improvement in the quality of the sound we produced.
We can't thank Yvonne enough for such an enjoyable evening, she goes away from the Orpheus with 50 more fans!!
We look forward to seeing her again sometime...
